Mazak’s HQR-250 MSY Delivers High Productivity at DISCOVER 2021

FLORENCE, Ky., November 1, 2021 - With upper turret featuring rotary tool milling (M), second spindle (S) and Y-axis capabilities (Y), Mazak’s HQR-250 MSY Multi-Tasking Machine showed DISCOVER 2021 attendees its highly productive, true Done In One® part-processing capabilities for high-volume throughput. The machine’s configuration provides complete part machining from slug and/or bar material in single setups, and Mazak demonstrated the machine paired with its RL-100 robot loader and other custom automation.

Balanced cutting using the machine’s upper and lower turrets further enhaces part production output. By operating together or separately, the HQR-250 MSY’s twin opposed turning spindles allow a single part to be machined on all surfaces through a coordinated “hand-off” between spindles. Alternately, two different parts can be machined simultaneously on one machine.

The spindles are supported by large-diameter bearings for high spindle rigidity. The main spindle features a 10" chuck, 3.58" spindle bore and 35-hp integral spindle motor that provides a maximum 4,000-rpm speed. The second spindle has an 8" chuck, 2.55" spindle bore and a 30-hp integral spindle motor that offers a 5,000-rpm top speed. Both have full CNC C-axis control for part positioning and contouring with indexing increments of 0.0001 degrees.

Because its twin turrets operate independently or together on the same workpiece, the machine can process two different features on a workpiece simultaneously or follow a balanced strategy where two tools work together on the same workpiece feature. In cases where the part configuration permits, balanced machining can potentially remove up to 25 percent of the cycle time.

Both the upper and lower turrets accommodate 12 tools (24 tools optional) each and have 4" Y-axis travel capability for off-centerline operations. Rotary tool spindles on each turret deliver 6,000 rpm and 7.5 hp for milling and drilling multi-tasking functionality.

The machine comes equipped with the MAZATROL SmoothG CNC, which makes it easy to generate programs for processing high-production complex parts through offcenterline machining as well as angled drilling, milling and tapping. The control offers several advanced programming functions, including SMOOTH CORNER CONTROL, which reduces vibrations and shortens machining cycle times through cutter path adjustments made when machining into corners, and INTELLIGENT POCKET MILLING, which engages a high-efficiency toolpath when milling out part cavities.
