Mazak’s HCN-5000S with Robotics Boosts Productivity in Short-Cycle-Time Parts

FLORENCE, Ky., October 18, 2016 – When outfitted with a pedestal-style robot, Mazak’s single-table HCN-5000S Horizontal Machining Center delivers even higher levels of productivity, especially for short-cycle-time part applications such as those often found in the automotive industry. The HCN-5000S also features Mazak’s new MAZATROL SmoothG CNC that further enhances machine capability and performance.

The HCN-5000S and standalone robot combination provides a space-saving, cost-effective automated manufacturing system for fast part loading and unloading. Mazak offers the machine in a two-pallet version as well that integrates into the company’s PALLETECH Manufacturing Cell (PMC).

The HCN-5000S’s new, highly optimized MAZATROL SmoothG CNC makes it easy to generate programs for processing complex parts through off-centerline machining as well as angled drilling, milling and tapping. The CNC also hosts a series of advanced programming features and functions that ensure high-speed, high-accuracy machining performance.

To significantly shorten non-cut times, the HCN-5000S rapid traverses at speeds up to 2,362 ipm (60 m/min) and accelerates at 1G in all axes. Plus, spindle acceleration speed is only 1.3 seconds for the machine’s standard 12,000-rpm spindle and 1.5 seconds for its other optional spindles.

For speed, efficiency and versatility, Mazak also offers 14,000-rpm and 30,000-rpm spindle options for the HCN-5000S. The four available integral motor spindle types allow users to match spindle performance to their specific machining requirements with the proper speeds and power.

The standard 40-taper 12,000-rpm spindle provides power and speed for general machining applications, while the high-torque, heavy-duty 40-taper 14,000-rpm version generates 88 ft-lbs of torque at a continuous rating to a maximum of 223 ft-lbs to increase metal removal rates for hard to machine materials. With maximum speeds of 18,000 rpm and 30,000 rpm, the 40-taper semi high-speed and HSK high-speed versions allow for faster machining and superior surface finishes when cutting aluminum and other nonferrous workpieces.

Mazak has equipped the HCN-5000S with a standard 40-position tool storage magazine and, as optional, offers 60-, 80-, 120- and 160-postion magazines in addition to its Tool Hive magazines with either 180, 240 or 330 positions. The large tool storage capacity of the HCN-5000S means shops can handle a wide variety of parts and perform continuous unattended machining over long periods of time.

Featuring a 19.7” (500 mm) square pallet, the HCN-5000S accommodates workpieces up to 31.5" (800 mm) in diameter, 39.4" (1,000 mm) high and weighing as much as 1,540 lbs (698.5 kg). Its direct-drive rotary table rotates 90 degrees in 0.9 seconds and features a 0.001-degree minimum step for precise 4-axis indexing and machining. Axis travels measure 28.7" (729 mm) in X and Y and 29.13" (740 mm) in Z.
