In 2024, economic factors will continue to challenge manufacturers. The manufacturing sector will continue to experience a mild recession as the consumer-driven part of the economy quickly slows. With 10,000 baby boomer generation employees predicted to leave the workforce per day, according to a report by ITR Economics, the labor shortage will also persist in the coming year. At this year’s Performance Racing Industry (PRI) show December 7-9 in Indianapolis, Mazak will demonstrate three automation-ready machines designed with motorsports part production in mind. Mazak’s Kentucky-built SYNCREX Series – the company’s entry into the Swiss-style turning machine market – provides shops a feature-rich machine platform that meets the growing demand for both low-mix/high-volume production and high-mix/low-volume production. As a pioneer in friction stir welding (FSW) technology, Mazak MegaStir will display some of its latest developments for that advanced joining process at FABTECH 2023 in the Mazak Optonics booth A3502. Among those developments are the company’s dynamic and intelligent FSW toolholders and its recently released line of diamond FSW tool tips. Dynamic holders support older legacy machines, while intelligent holders provide connectivity for process feedback, and the diamond tipped tools enhance FSW performance and extend tool life.

Launched in the early days of World War II, Graetz Manufacturing Inc. began as a family-run sawmill and blacksmith shop that made equipment and repair parts for the local farming community. Mazak MegaStir has signed an agreement making it the exclusive supplier of tooling for MELD Manufacturing’s solid deposition technology. As a pioneer in friction stir welding (FSW) technology, Mazak MegaStir will provide its hard metal expertise along with tooling specifically developed for the MELD process that also incorporates the use of friction as part of its solid deposition process.
The Kentucky-built Mazak Ez Series comes to Canada for the Western Manufacturing Technology Show in Edmonton. In booth 308, Mazak will feature its QT-Ez 12MY Multi-Tasking Turning Center and VC-Ez 20 Vertical Machining Center, both from the series of machines that put Mazak quality and reliability within reach for virtually any shop with productive, space-saving efficiency at an affordable price.
With experience in the manufacturing industry dating back to the age of 13, Mazak President Dan Janka once again has accepted the position of chairman of the board of The Association for Manufacturing Technology (AMT). Janka, an AMT member since 2005, last served as chairman in 2010. He retired from the board in 2013, but remained an active committee member and attended the association’s forecasting conferences.

In manufacturing, there are instances when the simplicity of conversational-type part programming applies, and then there are those applications when EIA/ISO G-code programming is a must. Aerospace and medical machining programs, for instance, often require incremental control and documentation of tool movement, and automotive production programs must be free of all time-consuming machine motion where fractions of seconds become critical when producing hundreds of thousands of parts.
During the Precision Machining Technology Show (PMTS) 2023, Mazak will showcase several models from its new SYNCREX Series of Swiss-style machines in booth 3053. Among them will be the SYNCREX 38/9 that accommodates bar stock up to 1.5” (38mm), and incorporates a removable guide bushing adapter that allows operators to preset guide bushings outside of the machine.
With total customer support in mind, Mazak has made strategic changes to its distribution network. Effective April 1, 2023, Pioneer Machine Sales will provide sales and service support for Mazak customers in Arkansas and Oklahoma, while long time Mazak distributor A.W. Miller Technical Sales, Inc. will expand its territory to serve customers in Eastern Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware and the Southern half of New Jersey.
